I am Steph from Hayle in Cornwall. I’ve been looking for my perfect home for years but never found it. After several house purchases and house moves, my husband and I decided to build our own home so that we can have input into the design & layout.

Building plots in Cornwall are rare & can be expensive. The opportunity to buy our neighbours property became available when they told us of their plans to retire to Spain. We decided to go for it and bought a Mundic block bungalow for £120,000. We plan to demolish it and build a 4 bedroom house. We purchased the bungalow in November 2019.

I have a passion for property. My ideal job would be a property developer or an Estate Agent. I’m neither. Instead I work as a primary care manager in a GP practice but I enjoy it & I’ve been working in the same practice for over 30 years.

We have done one self-build project in the past in 1997. It was done on a very tight budget and it had its ups and downs (more downs than ups). The compromises were too big so it was not our forever home so we sold the property. We did learn a lot from our experience, although it did put us off building a house again for a while. However, I got itchy feet and we went on to convert a workshop into a 1 bedroom apartment. Also, in collaboration with my brother, we purchased a pair of derelict 1 bedroom cottages and renovated them. So it’s fair to say that we are not complete novices but we’re not experts either. This time we hope to get it right.
